Anatomy of a Smile

ANATOMY OF A SMILE

The anatomy of a smile is extremely important because a bright and attractive smile creates an unbeatable first impression. Without saying a single word, your smile can convey self-confidence and optimism.
Fortunately, advances in cosmetic dentistry have allowed the vast majority of people to benefit from different procedures. All of them designed to help make your smile look better. The extent to which we can provide a smile makeover is often dependent upon your teeth and gums’ characteristics.

SMILE DESIGN PRINCIPLES

⦁ Facial esthetics
⦁ Gum esthetics
⦁ Micro esthetics
⦁ Macro esthetics

ESTHETIC COMPONENTS OF A SMILE

Midline
⦁ Having a midline that coincides with your other facial features help those who view your smile to focus on the middle part of it.
Smile arc
⦁ The curve of your upper teeth should be aligned with the curve of your bottom lip.
Gums
⦁ Your smile should show no more than 2 mm of gum above the teeth.
Lips
⦁ Lips are the frame of your smile. Size and shape of lips have a high impact on your smile.
Teeth
⦁ Your central incisors should be between 10.5 and 12.5 mm long and 20% longer than they are wide. ⦁ Teeth that have a round shape are considered more feminine. ⦁ Squared teeth are considered more masculine. ⦁ All front teeth (incisors and canines) should be as symmetrical as possible. ⦁ Your smile should ideally show all central and lateral incisors, also canines. Upper premolars or molars may be partially visible. ⦁ Tooth color is key to smile aesthetics.
Buccal corridor
⦁ It is the gap between your back teeth and the corner of your lips. If this gap is too big, your smile will be too narrow, and if it is too small, your smile will look toothy.
